PANG- AS A NOMINAL

PANG- used as a nominal prefix combines differently with bases from the way PANG-used as a verb prefix does (although there are a few exceptions where the nominal will combine in the same fashion as the verb).

The sound changes generally follow these rules:

Before verb bases that begin with B or P or M, the -NG of the prefix changes to M.

BALÍKPAMBALÍK‘used for turning’
PATÓSPAMPATÓS‘used for wrapping’

Before verb bases that begin with D, T, S or N the -NG of the prefix changes to N.

TRÁPOPANTRÁPO‘used for wiring’
SIPÍTPANSIPÍT‘used for fastening’ 36

Before the bases that begin with all other sounds, there is no change in form of the prefix.

HÍKEPANGHÍKE‘used for hiking’
KÁWATPANGKÁWAT‘used for playing’
ÚBAKPANGÚBAK‘used for paring’

The prefixes PANG+PA- are combined as PAMPA-
